The Bourne Ultimatum

Posted by Heather on April 29, 2008

In this sequel Jason Bourne returns as he discovers a reporter from London is writing a story about himself, and Bourne rushes to meet him only to discover things go much deeper than even he had initially surmised. Of course Bourne isn’t the only person searching for the leak, but the CIA has it’s own new dark secret group that has covered and fixed where Treadstone went wrong. It isn’t long before they butt heads and there is once again a price on Bourne’s head while he tries to understand what’s happening and continue to discover his real identity. The memories are short and confusing but he’s determined to understand them.

The Ultimatum hits hard and fast. This quick action packed film gets right to the point and delivers some of the best Bourne fight scenes and action sequences to date. While the action scenes are brilliant, the suspense that builds in this addition is edge of your seat excitement. Meanwhile, we once again get further into the depth and psyche of Jason Bourne. Somehow, even with the amazing things he does Bourne still remains a tangible character that is easy to sympathize and connect with.

There are returning for this time around as well, including Pamela Landy (Joan Allen) and Nicky Parsons(Julia Stiles). Both of these roles are CIA operatives that Bourne has already made a connection with in the past and it makes for interesting interactions in this installment and the different roles they all play. The especially interesting addition was the new antagonist Noah Vosen(David Strathaim), the CIA directer who has the notion to have Bourne assassinated by his new and improved killers. Nothing is ever what it seems in these movies, and these characters are rich with Bourne history, not to mention great chemistry, especially Stiles and Damon. They manage to create a connection without barely speaking a word to one another. This understanding and chemistry is wonderful onscreen magic.

The Ultimatum is the best in the series thus far, driving deeper into the who and how of Jason Bourne, while still remaining true to the pure Bourne spirit of amazing action and stunts. The Bourne movies are different from all other action genres out there. They aren’t afraid of mixing depth, a soulful hero, and intelligent elements to make a film. Matt Damon has returned to show us what a real action hero is. Four out of Four stars.
